We like to surround ourselves with women we admire, which means we're always in good company.

This fall, we're In Good Company with Cindy Hattersley—writer, interior design maven, and longtime friend of the brand—who we tapped for a little autumn style wisdom. With a designer’s eye and a California spirit, Cindy builds a closet the same way she creates a home: with intention, creativity, and patience.

A woman with short white hair and sunglasses smiling while wearing a black knit sweater and a large navy blue and gold scarf draped over her shoulders. She is standing outdoors in what appears to be a garden setting.

CINDY’S STYLE TIPS

On finding her perfect fall sweater: It needs to feel substantial, not flimsy, but soft enough that you want to live in it.

Her go-to fall outfit formula: Layers that assume the day will change its mind. A great blazer with a chambray button-up underneath, wide leg jeans, and boots that have earned their keep.

The #1 style rule she swears by (and one she breaks): The only rule I actually swear by is to dress for yourself, not for an invisible committee of onlookers. I love breaking the idea that certain colors or styles have an expiration date.

An unconventional style trick: I think of my closet the way I think of my house: collected, not assembled all at once. Nothing this good ever came together in a single shopping trip.

“A piece that only does one job isn’t earning a place in my closet.”

“MERSEA gets something a lot of brands miss: that easy doesn't have to mean sloppy, and comfort doesn't have to mean giving up on style.”
